Abstract

The article argues that the European Union’s Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP), from 1992 to 2019, allows the Union to play a leading role in peacekeeping operations, conflict prevention and strengthening international security. It is an integral part of the EU’s integrated crisis management approach, based on civilian and military assets. To give the European Union the opportunity to assume responsibility for crisis management, the European Council (Nice, December 2000) created permanent political and military structures. The Political and Security Committee meets every year at the ambassadorial level as a preparatory body for the EU Council to monitor the international situation within the framework of the common foreign and security policy.
