Proceedings of the International Conference on Diversity and Disability Inclusion in Muslim Societies (ICDDIMS 2017)

The theme of the 2017 “Diversity and Disability Inclusion in Muslim Societies: Experiences from Asia” (DDIMS 2017) conference is obviously relevant to the current society’s circumstances. The issue was discussed through the diverse range of papers submitted to the conference including Sensory Impaired; Family and Children; Inclusive Education; Daily Living and Community Inclusion; Religious Thought; Policy, Law, and Politics; Diversity and Community Inclusion; Community; Women, Gender, and Sexuality, and Mental Health.

Experts, academics, and practitioners had shed light on this important issue during the conference. Dealing with people with disability in Asian countries and in Muslim societies need comprehensive understanding, for cultures, customs, religious values, and local worldviews strongly involve in this practice. This provides all attendees with the opportunity to meet and interact through fruitfully discussions.

The aim of the conference held on November 21-22, 2017 in Jakarta, Indonesia is to generate greater understanding of the unique experiences of Muslim communities in Asia and processes that engage, promote, and enact practices of diversity and inclusion for community development and social cohesion. Of particular interest, are aspects of disability inclusion and diversity that aim to examine the ways in which local engagement with issues of disability inclusion and diversity generate new and nuanced learning that enable practices of respect, rights, and social cohesion. Further, the conference has brought academics, researchers, activists of disability and diversity, and those who have interest on this particular issue to share their research results and experiences.

There are 10 papers from the invited speakers, 44 contributions, and 38 of these are included in this proceeding. Each paper was already reviewed by two internal reviewers and was also checked using turnitin® application to ensure their originality and quality. We admit that there are still many aspects to be improved in this publication. Therefore, your valuable feedback is highly appreciated.

We would like to thank all participants for their contributions who have made this publication real. We are also sincerely grateful to all parties who have tirelessly “fought” for the successful conference, especially my colleagues who have reviewed the papers and provided valuable feedbacks. Last but not the least, it is our great honor to acknowledge the support of the Faculty of Da’wa and Communication Sciences, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah-Jakarta, Australian Catholic University, Western Sydney University, LP2M UIN Syarif Hidayatullah-Jakarta, Program Peduli, and the Australian Government.
