- Abstract
In early generative approaches, idiomaticity was equated with non-compositionality, and it was regarded as a binary concept, dividing language into idioms and non-idioms. Idioms were assigned only a marginal status in language. This paper summarizes findings from studies in discourse analysis, phraseology, and psycholinguistics that have shown that idiomaticity is better conceived of as a phenomenon that is multifactorial in nature, scalar in nature, and deserves a central position in any grammatical theory.
