- Abstract
Since the term of translanguaging was put forward by Welsh educator Cen Williams in the 1990s, it had aroused great interest among scholars and researchers in linguistics and applied linguistics abroad. In the past 20 years, the term has developed into a new influential paradigm which has great effect on the conceptualization of an individual’s communicative competence and development in language learning, and on the reflection of new approaches to second or foreign language instruction including bilingual or multilingual education. This paper attempts to elaborate the concept and characteristics of translanguaging and discuss its contributions and implications for the study of applied linguistics and language education.
