Abstract

As typical speech phenomena, discourse markers are words or expressions which mainly play a procedural role in the process of language production and comprehension, including conjunctions, adverbs, prepositional phrases, and interjections. The employment of discourse markers contributes to the success of communication between the speaker and the hearers. This study makes quantitative and qualitative analyses on the 50 prepared English speeches made by the advanced EFL learners in authoritative English speaking competitions in China. The features and quality of their use of discourse markers are found. And it is expected to shed light on further studies in the teaching and learning of discourse markers.
