Abstract

This study examines the intersection of geodiversity, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable management of resources, emphasizing the need for integrated approaches to environmental conservation and resource reclamation. Geodiversity, as a fundamental component of natural capital, supports ecosystem functions and biodiversity, underscoring its essential role in ecosystem assessments and sustainable development. The review highlights geoscience’s role in linking geodiversity with ecosystem management, particularly in degraded landscapes where restoration ecology addresses soil health, nutrient cycling, and vegetation recovery. Effective remediation and land reclamation practices, especially in mining and karst-affected areas, are shown to benefit from low-cost, self-sustaining techniques such as natural succession and organic soil amendments. Additionally, the importance of microbial processes in rock weathering and nutrient cycling is explored, revealing complex interactions within biogeochemical cycles that underpin ecosystem stability. Restoration projects in various environments, from rivers and mangroves to mining sites, illustrate the value of interdisciplinary cooperation and the challenges posed by contamination and temporal lags in ecological responses. This work advocates for holistic environmental management frameworks that integrate geoscientific insights with biodiversity conservation, fostering resilient ecosystems that support both ecological and societal well-being.
