- Abstract
Based on intergenerational equity theory, this paper empirically investigates the contribution of individual and family variables to income differences through the lens of “inequality of opportunity” and “inequality of effort” based on a big data perspective, using questionnaires primarily targeted at highly educated youth. The results show that individual income is less constrained by ‘inequality of opportunity’ factors, such as gender, family and parental education, and type of parental occupation. Party members, middle-class families, doctoral degrees and higher-paying industries were more likely to have higher incomes. In summary, inequality of opportunity has less of an impact on income in the current period than individuals.
