Abstract

Applying technology to assist older and frail people to live independently is a growing mega-trend. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) is an initiative by the Eu-ropean Union to “jump-start” the market. This paper will explain why AAL is a mega-trend, what is the current state of the market and how can ICAICTBM 2013 members get involved in the devel-oping the market. To be successful, AAL has to create elaborate networks at many different scales ranging from in-house LANs, to NGN and IP compatible communications links, through to enterprise-server-scale database interaction that cross over public and private entities.
