Self-Image and Ideal Self Concept of Adolescent in Islamic Boarding School and Public School

Abstract

The Ideal Self Concept is an idealized version of ourself created out of what we have learned from our life experiences, the demands of society, and what we admire in our role models. While self-image is a person’s assessment of his own body. In adolescents’ perceptions of their own bodies and goals of ideal of themselves are influenced by many factors, such as the environment of school and peers. This can affect mental and psychological activities in adolescents that take place in interactions in their environment. The purpose of study was to determine the differences of self-image and ideal self-concept of adolescent in Islamic boarding school and public school (Studies in Islamic boarding school AI and Junior High School Kesugihan, Cilacap, Indonesia). This is a cross sectional study. The sample of this study was 72 seventh grade students consist of 36 students from Islamic Boarding School and 36 students from Public School. The sampling method was cluster random sampling. Data collected through online questionnaire about self-image dan ideal self-concept. Mann Whitney was used as statistical test. The results of study showed that there were differences of the self-image of adolescents in Islamic boarding school and public schools (ρv = 0.004; = 0.05; Z = -2.849) and there is no difference between the ideal self-concept in adolescents in the two types of schools (ρv = 0.051; = 0). .05; Z = -1.949). Adolescent self-image is one of the five components of self-concept formation. Positive perceptions of self must be developed early in school, because a good self-image will improve self-concept and improve students’ psychological health.
