The fourth Asia-Pacific Research in Social Sciences and Humanities, Arts and Humanities Stream (AHS-APRISH) is an annual conference held by Universitas Indonesia and has become a platform for scholars in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities to share and engage in intellectual discussions with fellow scholars and practitioners. In 2019, the theme was on network society and how it echoes the issues of continuity and change. For the Arts and Humanities stream, the sub-topic was “Revolutionizing Culture in the Network Society,” and from the large number of presentations, 50 articles were selected to be published in this international proceeding.

In the field of Arts and Humanities, networks have already been used to examine cultural products and practices. Scholars from this particular field have been doing research about networks, for example networks in its metaphorical perspective, networks of communities, networks of ideas, and how cultural texts and practices are a part of a network. Network societies have become new spaces of connectivity while creating a dynamic mobility in culture and the everyday lives. By revolutionizing the communication system within multiple cultural spheres, the idea of network is logically connected to power and culture. The process of inclusion and exclusion within a network is critical in constituting power. However, even though power is used to create hierarchies, there will always be cultural resistance as an attempt to challenge hegemonic culture. Through the process resistance and negotiation, subordinated groups or alternative cultural products or practices are able to disrupt and create more empowering networks of cultural spheres.

In academia, particularly in arts and the humanities, there is an urgency to reflect on the theoretical and methodological implications of this rapid development of network society and digital technology. The articles in this proceeding open dialogues and engage with existing scientific discussions to look at the political, social, and most importantly cultural aspects of the network society in the digital age within the field of history, literary and cultural studies, archeology, information technology, linguistics, area studies, and other related fields.

Finally, AHS-APRISH 2019 was held with the support and assistance of Universitas Indonesia and the Research and Innovation Management Office in the University. We are also grateful to have the support of the dean, vice-deans, managers, lecturers, staff, and students from the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia, as a part of the organizing team.
